I was in a drill and here what The Obserber the paper Mebers of the rgional American Red Cross chapter were on high alert Friday night. Not for a catastrophe, but for the needs of those participating in an emergency drill. It was an evacuation shelter exercise at Valley Fellowship, one that kept Red Cross volunteers scrambling, dealing with dilemmas such as : talking with a individual who wanted to bring in a pet snake :communicating with a mute person asking for water. :treating a diabetic who had lost consciousness. The indivduals posing these and other challenges were portraying EOU students who had been forced to evacuate a residence hall. In reality there was no residence hall evacuation Firday. EOU students were portrayed at the exrcise by about 20local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Jeff Click, a member of Boy Scout Troop 513, was among them Click was assigned to play the role of a person unable to speak. He had one of the most challenging of roles. He found the asking for a glass of water can be an involved task when you cannot speak. Still, Red Cross volunteers succeeded in helping Click as they did in assisting every one of the "evacuees."
